12 posts in this topic

Anyone in Southern Dutchess happen to see the large search lights at the top of Mt Beacon tonight? I didn't but heard from several people about them. Didn't hear anything on the scanner. Anyone else have any info?

That's what I thought but it's called Evacuation Day when the Britsh left the Hudson Valley after the Revolutionary war. I found the answer on pojo news.com.

They probably took the back road up the top and then took it down from the top.... there is an access road on the other side of the mountain... goes past the reservoir and all the way up to the radio towers.

So much for being in a budget crunch? I'm sure some part of government is paying for it.

Personally, I think it was money well spent if it gets people's attention and they learn something from it. How many people really knew that the British continued to garrison New York City and Savannah GA for two whole years AFTER Cornwallis's "decisive" defeat at Yorktown? Or that the British eventually defeated the French after they intervened on our behalf? It saddens me when I hear so many of my countrymen know so little about our own history. The spotlights were a great idea; they got people talking!

It shouldn't take spotlights to get people to talk about our history.

Unfortunately these days, it does.

Its sad when children from other countries know more about the history of the USA than most adults from the USA itself. A sad, unfortunate truth these days.

In that case I know two spotlights that get turned on every year to force people to remember a day in our history. We whould leave them on all the time and not just once a year!

Very true Chief. Unfortunately, all the political bureaucracy, and all the "powers that be" turn a blind eye to such reminders of their own history, and look forward to "healing the wounds" and pinching pennies.
