Not paid, mileage only

Several, you have one for each battalion, some for the investigation division, hazmat division

Experience, past Chiefs mostly

Assist with the IC, training needs, inventory of depts and on and on.

Please chime in I am sure I missed several things.

In the Town of Colonie we have multiple "Operation's Cars." they are elected to their postions by the chiefs of the 12 departments in the town. They handle all the ICS positions, i.e. safety, logistics, communications, accountability, and so on. They are not paid but do run red lights and siren and Car 1 has an official marked car.

One of the main responsibilities of County Cars at any major incident is supposed to be a liaison to DC911, and any other agencies. If the IC needs, lets say DOT for sand for a large spill, or the DC Command Vehicle, they can ask the CC, and the CC can use their resources to make the arrangements. Also if refreshments are needed at long duration events.

This is meant to take a large burden off of the IC, and they can focus on the main incident.

Many misconceptions are that the County Cars come to take command and manage the incidents, which is false. County Cars are nothing more (no offense meant) than another resource. If you needed 2 TLs for a major fire, they can make the call, to decide which ones to request, so as to not strip immediate surrounding ones, or, they can just request them from DC911, and the County can dispatch the best ones suited.

Or you can be big in politics. Then you can have someone call from County government and totally disregard the selection comittees choice, and put in the person THEY want. Enough said

County Cars often have the ability to push their own fire dept to go to scenes of major incidents.

Being one of those "County Cars" from Dutchess, xfirefighter484x got it right......we are there to help, as another resource. I ahve never seen a FD "pushed" in Dutchess.....or someone selected becasue of politics. All of us are X- chiefs, and are still active in the fire service and oly want the best for the FDs, and that incident that may be happening.

As County Car 9, I am there to be Deputy coordinator for training....to assist the departments in their training needs. Markmets415 was close, we get a very small "stipend" each year, plus mileage. We can be an extra set of eyes and ears, experienced past chiefs that can assist an any way the IC deems necessarry.

I cannot comment on other counties, but that is how it is done in Dutchess.........

I believe every county has deputy coordinators. In Westchester there are 11 of us on the fire side and 3 on the EMS side.

9 of us are actually titled Mutual Aid Coordinators, 2 are assigned for fire investigation to oversee the 5 C&O teams throughout the county. We must apply for the position and go through an interview by officals from DES and the fire advisory board. We receive a stipend as well as mileage. Our main focus is to respond within our respective battalion to any mutual aid fire. We are also required to conduct an annual Battalion wide drill which we may conduct jointy with another adjoining battalion. We also have to hold meetings. We are to realy information from DES to our departments and bring back any concerns from our departments back to the Deputy Commisioner. We also assist our respective departments with other matters that may arise. We are designated on the radio as Battalion 10 through 18, cars 24 & 25 are the C&O deputies and EMS car 10, 11 & 12. Some of us are former Chiefs. The 2 C&O guys have law enforcement and fire service backgrounds.

Thanks Rich, we in Dutchess are extremely lucky to have such an excellent group off County Cars, it is surely nice to know that they are there to assist and to be able to tap into their vast knowledge and also knowing they ALL have been there is a great resource.

Just took a look at the Battalion map and had a quick question. What are the two areas at the top of the map above Pine Plains and Milan that are actually on Columbia? Do Milan and Pine Plains cover a part of Columbia County or is that only if the neighboring departments up there require M/A from Dutchess, the CCs go up there to assist?

Yes, there are areas in Columbia County (Town of Gallatin for example) in the Jackson Corners area, where Dutchess Departments cover the area.
