Spano seeks raises for top staff

By Jorge Fitz-Gibbon and Gerald McKinstry

The Journal News • November 23, 2008

WHITE PLAINS - Westchester County Executive Andrew Spano is sticking to his promise to freeze his top commissioners' salaries next year - but he's giving them raises this year instead.

The Westchester County Board of Legislators is due to vote tomorrow on $890,000 in pay increases that would give 3.25 percent raises to 23 of Spano's top commissioners and department heads, retroactive to Jan. 1.

The plan also bumps longevity, compensation and other pay for supervisors, prosecutors and management-level staff at Westchester Community College.

It has the unanimous endorsement of the county board's Committee on Budget and Appropriations, which recommended in favor of the plan last week, and will now go before the full board.

RAISES?

You have got to be kidding me!

Retroactive no less.

Politics at it's best, remember ther will be no raises next year. And I love the comments how it was because CSEA finally got a contract and hevan forbid an employee makes more then a political appontee. BTW, what kind of CSEA job pays 160K?

Politicians live in their own little world. Everyone is talking about the crappy economy and how the state, county and mta have budget problems yada yada yada. But yet they can rename the triborough bridge to the kennedy bridge and it will cost tax payers 4 million to change street signs. Because that is oh so important. Now more payroll raises.

What ever happened to thinning out unnecessary spending? Money gets tight on budgets and they give out more money and just increase taxes.

Andy Spano has got to GO! Westchester County government either has to downsize or some smaller locals governments have to be absorbed into it to reduce the number of spending plans! Another tax increase, the bulk of it appears to be so one of these politicians can get another raise on their non-full time job?

Oh, and I like how they get to decide upon their own raises. Is this Wall Street????? When the taxpayers have no more money to give, will the Feds bail out Westchester too? The voters should decide whether the County Government deserves a raise. They are not under contract and technically work for the people. Maybe it is time they took a cut in pay, got rid of their county vehicles and/or drivers and gave something back for all they have gotten!
