Fighting Forest Fires

I'm watching the Sylmar fire on various websites and news channels. How does anyone fight this type of fire? I can see helicopters making drops and they look like tiny specks against the backdrop of the fire.

A Fire Storm is the only way to describe it.

Has anyone here ever fought a fire like this?

How about some discussion on various techniques, PPE, etc?

It is my understanding that you just simply try to contain the fire through the use of paths, trenches, roads, ect. You just contain it in an area and try to prevent it from jumping whatever lack of vegetation you have made and just let it burn its self out. The use of water drops, slurry and only "firefighting" that you do is if it is burning in an area that has not been contained yet or if it had jumped the fire break and spreading.
