Buchanan to consider part-time policing

By Robert Marchant • The Journal News • November 5, 2008

BUCHANAN - The village is looking into the possibility of hiring part-time police officers.

The Board of Trustees has agreed to an in-house study on the concept following the recent retirement of a village police officer, and the potential that more retirements could be coming up soon.

Mayor Al Donahue said the idea came up at a recent board meeting and was worth considering.

"The board is in agreement we should do a study. We're asking for input to see if it's feasible," he said. Donahue said he was keeping an open mind on the idea, noting it could save money for the village. "There are pros and cons," he said.

The village is budgeted for five full-time police officers, but now has only four on staff after the recent retirement.
