Accident turns officer's world upside down

MONTGOMERY — She's already crying when she picks up the phone. Claudia Bennett has caller I.D., so she knows why a reporter is asking for her husband.

"It's hurting him so bad," she says, barely above a whisper. "You have no idea."

Officer John Bennett, a long-time member of the Village of Maybrook Police Department, was driving an unmarked Ford Crown Victoria in nearby Montgomery Sunday night. He left his jurisdiction, he told Claudia, to grab a bite to eat.

Around 9 p.m., a call came in for a fight in Maybrook, and Bennett responded, heading toward the village on Route 208.
