MARS (Mutual Aid) and NYC Vollies?

Looking to volley in Queens (possibly Forest Hills) and they are part of the FDNY MARS system. Just wanted to know if anyone knew how it works?

Are they dispatched via 911 ONLY if there are no FDNY buses available at the time of the call? Or Are they dispatched to every 911 call in their coverage area?

I would like to Volley somewhere (To gain some experience since becoming an EMT) that actually is active and goes to jobs pretty often and I am guessing sticking with a MARS participating Ambulance will fit the bill.
