Police officer suicides

Do our local departments have any programs in place to address this issue??

By CARRIE ANTLFINGER

Associated Press Writer

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Police Sgt. Chuck Cross pointed his department-issue .40-caliber handgun at his temple, finger on the trigger, as he sat drunk against his hallway wall.

"I was about eight pounds of a trigger pull away," he said.

He's unsure why he stopped. Fellow officers, called by his girlfriend, took him to a mental health center. He was charged with disorderly conduct while armed, and was fired.

but after six suicides in three years the Milwaukee Police Department now provides suicide awareness training. Since starting the program early this year it has had two more suicides

? shouldn't have the department implemented a program after the first two. granted, the first one could have been by chance, but SIX!

8 suicides and at least 1 attempted, i guess, within 4 years...maybe they might want to implement a better screening program as well...

Since articles can't be posted and I can't find the article in that link, does anyone know details on why he was fired? If it was as a result of his attempted suicide that seems insane. You have a person in crisis and you fire them for it??

NYPD has POPPA. Here is the link: http://www.poppainc.com/ Check out the 'about poppa' , started in 1996 after 26 suicides in two years.
