This is another unfortunate incident that could have been prevented. Remember, when proceeding through an intersection, apparatus have to due regard for saftey whether they have the right away or not. Simple things like nowing where your apparatus are responding from, and knowing what intersections you may meet at can help prevent this. If Engine 1 and Engine 2 are responding to a call, and at some point the two routes meet, say over the air, "E1 is approaching Main and 1st" this way, if E2 is also approaching Main and 1st, they can slow down and prepare for them. It's the little things that can sometimes make the big difference.
