Date: 07-17-08

Time: 1040hrs

Location: 20 South Broadway

Units Operating: YPD 4th PCT, ESU Truck 3, Truck 4; YFD E-303, L-74, R-1, B-1; Empress

Description Of Incident: MV jumped the sidewalk with (2) injured.

Writer: Truck4

1300hrs- PD conducting an Accident Investigation. (1) Victim to Jacobi by Empress.

Just learned that the 2 people hit by the elderly driver were the parents of an ER Nurse at St. John's Riverside Hospital. The mother is still in Jacobi in critical but stable condition with a number of injuries including a Pelvic fracture. She is set to go to surgery as soon as they feel her injuries have stabilized enough to allow it. Please keep them in your prayers and thoughts.

Once again, this topic brings up the age old question, when is it time to stop senior citizens from driving. I have not spoken to the accident investigator in this incident, but from what I learned from others it sounds like a "senior moment" is to blame for this unfortunate event. We continue to hear more and more of these incidents occur, but no one has the gall to step up and make legislature because they fear losing votes come election time because senior citizen groups are notoriously politically based. Thank God no one died in this incident!

As well, at this time, no charges are being filed on the driver...that is what the public information officer has addressed to the media outlets.
