Mother of the year? Not exactly

The genius of the week award goes to the mom from Brooklyn who allegedly allowed her 15-year-old son and two of his teenage friends to skateboard on Route 9W last Saturday.

That's right.Cornwall Town cops got a call shortly after noon Saturday about kids skateboarding on the state highway. When they got there, they found the three skateboarders in action, and the one kid's mom trailing them in a vehicle with her hazard lights flashing.

The thoughtful mom told the cops she was there so her son and his friends wouldn't get hit. The cops cited her for endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, and she and her son's two friends, ages 19 and 16, were all charged with disorderly conduct, a violation.

Cornwall Town police Chief Todd Hazard called it "truly amazing" that anyone would try to skateboard on the busy, dangerous highway, and "even more mind-boggling that a parent would not only condone this but participate in this action."

This is what happens when city folk think that Route 9W is a happy lil ole country lane. Reminds me of how my mom used to march us from Shenorock up Route 118 to go to Baldwin Place when we were kids. It was insane 25 years ago, and it's even sillier to ponder today.
