Westchester County Squad Numbering

6 posts in this topic

The correct designation is ENGINE 22, when it responds as part of the squad it will be SQUAD 2.

If that is the case, are we all missing something here with the Yonkers S-11 or S-311 depending on what they want to call it that day? Would they then be Squad 1 when they respond with the squad and still only E-311 if they dont? If so, then if the county needs multiple SQUAD units to respond to an incident, then the required manpower of 6 specially trained FFs would be satisfied correct?

Yes that's correct. Yonkers does what they want on their own frequency, just like anyone else can. When they are on the county frequency they should be using the county designations. Yonkers Rescue is RESCUE1 on Yonkers Freq, but in the county it is RESCUE 11.

Their Squad is Designated SQUAD 1, and they should be on the county radio as SQUAD 1 when they respond as part of the Squad. If E-311 reponds as an Engine they should be using ENGINE 311.

In my buffiest opinion, I don't think "the term "Squad" is the most appropriate designator for these type of units. They should be called "Haz-Mat Support Units" or something of the like.

I feel a "Squad" should be a Rescue-Pumper, with standards for equipment similar to FDNY and other Rescue Engine companies.

Yonkers Squad 11 is just that, both a RescueEngine & a HAZMAT unit

I don't know if anyone saw, but in the Jan. 2005 edition of Fire Rescue Magazine, there is an article which mentions the Squad teams. It mentions how other places throughout the country are using the Westchester County Special Ops Task Force as a model to create similar programs in their areas. If anyone has this issue, the article is on Page 35-36.
