Knox County, IL -- A 73-year-old volunteer firefighter from Bishop Hill, Ill., was struck and killed by a pickup truck Monday night in rural Knox County, the Illinois State Police said Tuesday.

Theodore Myhre, 73, was helping a fire truck back up when the accident occurred at 4:57 p.m., authorities said.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Department was notified first by the Bishop Hill Volunteer Fire Department that Myhre had been struck by a vehicle on U.S. 34 at County Road 2900 North.

Police said a 1989 Dodge pickup truck driven by Daniel P. Nolan, 70, of Oneida, Ill., that was traveling east on U.S. 34 struck Myhre.

The man was transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Galesburg, where he was later pronounced dead by the Knox County coroner. The accident remains under investigation by the Knox County Sheriff’s Department and the Illinois State Police.

Details about the fire call that preceded the accident were not immediately available.

Maybe he was Fire Police? A lot of older members still want to be involved with the FD, and the Fire Police give them an opportunity to continue that. In many depts around here, older members show up and usually just take on traffic duty, helping out the PD.
