One Day, A Hybrid Police Cruiser?

10 posts in this topic

There's no doubt that current fuel costs are impacting PD budgets across the country. Additionally, the pollution that PD cars create can be lessened.

So, with that said, do you think you'll ever see the day of a Police Cruiser that uses hybrid technology, a diesel engine, or a smaller vehicle/engine?

You have an obvious problem of hybrid engines being underpowered by design. Give em a lot of power and they will suck up gas, the electric motor and gas motor can't co-exist and provide both power and fuel effiecency, one has to suffer. Once they get the technology for fast charges with capacitor batteries and other methods to recharge quickly, I think you will see police cars similar to the Volt prototype, or more likely the Telsa Roadster, where it is all-electric, and 200-300 miles per charge, and 0-60 in under 5 seconds (the Telsa is at 3.7s right now). Police cars are actually the ideal vehicle for all-electric, as they are always close to home, fleet type vehicles that usually don't do more than 200 miles without going home (Municipal police, not county/NYS).

Yea I think if they can find a way to keep the power of the car/truck the same you will be seeing hybrid police cars and firetrucks. We will just have to wait and see.

Diesel Hybrids for large diesel engines already exist. Wal Mart has placed an order for a ton of them. The primary use will be idling, not driving, so the hybrid system will be in addition to the diesel system. Look for them in fire apparatus soon.

Doesn't diesel cost like 5.50 a gallon?

However about alternative fuels...like the used food frying oils? Next time you are hungry, go to McD's get your lunch and fill up the car all at once...

Or we can just go back to the old days of foot patrol with call boxes...lol

Diesel costs more but you get much better mpg and lower maintenance costs.
