FYI

The 2008 Atlantic hurricane season officially starts June 1 and lasts until November 30. To help raise awareness of hurricane dangers and the need for storm preparation, the National Hurricane Center has designated May 25 to 31 as Hurricane Preparedness Week.

On May 22, 2008, NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center announced that projected climate conditions point to a near normal or above normal hurricane season in the Atlantic Basin this year. For 2008, the outlook indicates a 60 to 70 percent chance of 12 to 16 named storms, including 6 to 9 hurricanes and 2 to 5 major hurricanes. The outlook is a general guide to the overall seasonal hurricane activity,” retired Navy Vice Adm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Ph.D., undersecretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator said. “It does not predict whether, where or when any of these storms may hit land. That is the job of the National Hurricane Center after a storm forms.”

When it comes to hurricanes and other severe storms, the motto to remember is "Be Prepared."
