Something for EMS week.

You know I have the pleasure of know some great people. Alot of old-timers in the EMS field. The guys who have been doing this for well over 20years. I must say that some of them look on here, so thank you for teaching me alot of stuff, but the reason why I have started this topic is because there are EMT's and Paramedics that are my age that are already burned out. So I came across this quote on the internet. I have spoken to the person, who will remane nameless, and doesn't want me to share where I got this from. ( Sorry Doc, and Jack) So my question to you all is. If you once started EMS to help someone why do you feel burned out most of the time? What happen to the feeling of helping someone in need. Volunteer or paid we are all here to help our fellow man.

You know a lot of people say to me why do you do what you do. Why in god's name would i like to go to life's emergencies, See other peoples pain and suffering. My answer to them is this. If i don't then who would?? You know we all b**ch and moan about our job and it sucks to be held over and how the pay sucks. Yet we still come in to work everyday and still help the crack head who shot up way to much and is now not breathing, or the teenage mother who is still a baby her self and yet can't take her baby who she loves with all her heart, because her baby's daddy wants to hang with his boys. I think life is f**ked up in many ways, but people depend on us no matter what. So to all the burnout's out there in wonderland think about this. You once chose this as a profession, not for the money, but for the fact that you do care about your fellow man. So my question is this. What is the reason why you hate it so much? Even thou you made a small difference in someone's life. It still's counts. Most people are lucky to say the only time I see a dead body is in a funeral home. Most of us say, I’m glad I didn't see a dead body this week. As I end this I would like to say this. I'm proud to be called an EMT, and furthermore I'm glad to say I made a difference today. ARE YOU????

In my own opinion being burnt out is a state of mind. I worked ems in NYC*EMS for 5 yrs in East New York, Brooklyn, (from 92-97) If anyone knows the area it is a Sh*thole. But when you are doing 8-15 jobs in 8hrs it gets tiering. I just needed to step back and take a mental rest get rejuvinated for a little while. Took about a yr off Drove trucks cross country, didn't like that much and realized what the true calling was ems. Been going strong for the last 10 yrs. Became a medic moved down south (want to move back north yesterday but wife likes it here) and the same bs is down here as it is in ny. But remember this if it were not for the drunk skell or the people who can't drive we would not have a job. When you feel yourself getting "burnt out" take a break. Keep up the good work.
