Congrats to the Dallas FD for positioning the rig at an angle at the scene of the MVA and, avoiding a tragedy. Hope all the FFs recover quickly and praise goes to them for the rescue of the pickup driver.

Dallas Police Investigate Crash

DALLAS -- Dallas police are investigating a late-night wreck that tore up a city fire truck and sent four firefighters to a hospital.  

The firefighters were released from Baylor Hospital Friday after a high-impact collision that occurred Thursday night while the crew from Fire Station No. 9 was blocking Interstate 20 and helping with another accident.  

The engine was parked at an angle to protect the people in the first accident from oncoming traffic when a pickup rear-ended the engine, smashing the pickup and sending that driver to the hospital.  

"There is a major cost to the city in damages, however there were no lives lost in this accident. We're very fortunate," Capt. Jesse Garcia said.  

The firefighters helped rescue the driver of the pickup truck before getting medical attention themselves. They are expected to be OK.

Kudo's to them. But unfortunately many still are not blocking the scene, or not doing it correctly. Anyone whom takes EVOC knows that it is discussed, a vido of the I-10 incident in Oklahoma which injured several firefighters is talked about. VFIS also has a good free video of highway safety, you can get it off their website and if I remember is under their "programs" category.

Thanks to the proper placement of the engine a tragic event was prevented. Blocking is one of the most importent things we do on the scene today. There was a picture in the Journal News the other day of an accident on I-287. It showed the engine angled in to the scene but it was past the accident.

This is a very appropriate topic for this time of year, unfortunately many departments don't do this but it needs to almost be second nature for driver and chiefs, it will save lives
