Newburgh firefighters get safety gear

New equipment will allow them to rappel from four stories up

CITY OF NEWBURGH — In an old brick house, city firefighter Scott Mocko hooked a rope to the window sill and rappelled from the second floor.

A crowd had gathered below to watch the drill. Mocko's boots smacked against the plywood covering a lower window as he dangled in the air. He wore a new harness fastened around his thighs and waist. The rope extended up to a lever in front of his chest and up farther to the ladder hook jammed over the window sill.
