Albany Fire Chief Seeks Diversity

3 posts in this topic

Slight deviation from the original title / article but interesting take on residency here. wonder how often the commission decides to 'suspend or reduce' the requirement? If you're interested, you have a couple of weeks to meet the requirements for residency prior to the 30 days preceding the examination date of June 14.

From http://www.albanyny.org/_files/FireExam.pdf

RESIDENCE: Candidates must have been legal residents of Albany, Columbia, Greene, Rensselaer, Saratoga,

Schoharie or Schenectady County for at least thirty (30) days immediately preceding the date of the written

examination.

***Preference in appointment may be given to successful candidates who have been legal residents of the City of

Albany for at least thirty (30) days immediately preceding the date of the written exam.

***RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS

1) An applicant for competitive examination must be a legal resident on the date of the examination and must have

been a legal resident of the City of Albany for at least thirty (30) days immediately preceding the date of such

examination, unless otherwise mandated by law. This residence requirement may be suspended or reduced by

the Commission in cases where recruitment difficulties make such requirement disadvantageous to the public

interest.

2) When preference in certification is given to residents of the City of Albany, in order to be included in

certification as a resident of such municipality an eligible must be a legal resident on the date of the

examination and must be a legal resident of the City of Albany at the time of certification and at the time of

appointment.

STARTING SALARY: $35,523/Annual EMT

$36,685/Annual Paramedic

Also very reasonable salary, given the lower cost of living in Albany compared to the lower NY area (and starting salaries for most Westchester Departments ...)

This is exactly what I was speaking about in the last post "Why are we so special". To damn bad if blacks and the rest of the minorities dont want to join the FD/EMS. If someone was coming to put out a fire in my house or tend to a family member that broke their leg and had togo to the hospital, I wouldnt care what ethnicity they were so long as they knew what they were doing.
