The Status Of Mount Vernon Foam 1

8 posts in this topic

Just to add a bit about Foam1, the rig was aquired from the Westchester co airport with alot of red tape being cut. At the time that the rig (P-4) was recieved it was still in service as a spare at the airport. I was not a the fire last night and I am not going to comment if the Foam unit would have helped but suppose that this fire was 1 mile south from the incident and it was at the fuel terminals, yes the argument would be stronger about the use of the P-4. When we got the rig part of the thought was 1) to protect the fuel terminals on the southside of MV. 2) that if needed somewhere in the lower county I-95 or main st usa for a tanker fire this unit could be available. Over the years MV had a foam unit that did cover quite a bit of incidents. I remember it going to the grasslands reservation along time ago. At this point in time I don't know if the unit can be salvaged. Many rigs over the years have been refurbished including the same unit we have talked about. From the situation or status of FDMV I really don't think that the funding should be used to refurbish the rig primarily because we need many other things to be taken care of. Firehouses is a priority right now. If an outside agency such as Prague oil or whoever else is down there wants to spend some $ to refurb the rig then that would be great. From what I hear they hads their hands full last night and did the job like we normally do. And yes we do more with less which is nothing to be proud of but its a fact. The unit could be a benefit to all but its something that has to be adressed by administrators of the depts. which might benefit. The unit might be beyond the refirb stage. We will see what happens, maybe BASS or BROOKFIELD might have some use for it! B safe,Hudson

Yonkers FD may be able to make use of it. Maybe even New Rochelle. But, as you said, after sitting outside in the elements all this time...it's just sad that it was let go to waste. I know if Mount Vernon FD's sole mechanic had an actual proper staff to maintain a sound fleet, and, like many cities give their shops, a budget AKA MONEY, the situation would be different.

I hate to see things go to waste. There are so many departments, especially in the Southeast, that would LOVE to have what we throw away. Each time I see a Coca-Cola truck at Brookfield, I cringe, when I think about how some departments would be estatic to have a rescue. Given some modifications and maintainence, I'm sure this could or could have made an excellent tanker in a rural area that has in-house talent. (Some departments are still using old oil trucks from the 1960's- with no baffles!)

Years ago the oil companys were approched and that's how the first Foam 1 came about. I think it was Mobil that funded it and the then mechanic "Gouch" and some of the members bith career and volunteer did all the work. I remember the "58 Mack convert. Made its way down to Red Hook for a tank farm fire on a December night with guys riding the back step and an NYPD escort. It was an old workhorse. Wonder what happened to it as it was a classic. Big chrome grill with the bull dog ornament.

OK I have been corrected by someone who's memory is better than mine. the 58 Mack was Engine 5 and the foam truck at that time was a 51 seagrave. Now its coming back to me. Hey they were both convetables.

Other than the Sprague terminal, what other terminals are down there?

If my memory serves me correct, didn't FDMV convert 2 other Macks into Foam Trucks? Whatever happened to them?
