Helmet Painting Question

Im getting my red Cairns 1010 helmet painted black b/c I dont feel like buying a new helmet. Do I go with a flat black or a glossy black? I was going to have it done by a friend at the bodyshop around here. After I have taken all the hardware, tets, and what not off, should he sand it down before he sprays it or go right over the red?

NoFear, traditionally its a glossy black and Cairns makes the paint for it.
