Cop suicide rate spurs launch of prevention effort

More LAPD officers kill selves than die on duty

With LAPD officers more than twice as likely to kill themselves than be killed in the line of duty, the department is starting its first suicide prevention program.

Kevin Jablonski, chief police psychologist for the Los Angeles Police Department, told the civilian Police Commission on Tuesday that the department's suicide rates are "exorbitantly high" compared with the general population, even though it has steadily dropped over the last nine years.
