Voters reject proposal to build new firehouse

PINE ISLAND — A bid to build a $4 million firehouse and unite the Pine Island and Amity fire companies failed at the polls last night. The tally showed 236 opposed the project; 139 favored it.

Pine Island fire commissioners have angled for a new firehouse for 12 years.

“It’s back to the drawing board,” Commissioner George Haas said. “We accept the votes, but we have to get feedback to find out if it’s the economy or if people thought something was too extravagant.”
