NYC Officials Push for Benefits for Slain Auxiliary Officers' Kin

TATIANA DELIGIANNAKIS and LEONARD GREENE (NY Post)

New York

Reminds me alot of the Chris Kangas case in PA of the Junior Firefighter who was denied benefits because he was not a "fully trained and certified firefighter."

Quite a load of crap. Auxillaries, Juniors, Explorers, Cadets all put in work, so we all deserve benefits. Obviously these officers died because of their duties as a Auxillary cops, so why shouldn't they be entitled to the benefits?

Discuss.

Reason for edit: Forgot to drop the "Y" and add "ies" for auxillaries.

Officials Seek Benefits for Slain Auxiliary Officers

By Thomas J. Lueck

More than a year after two auxiliary police officers were chased down and shot to death by a gunman in Greenwich Village, Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly and Senator Charles E. Schumer are leveling harsh criticism at the Department of Justice for denying federal death benefits to the families of the two slain officers.

At a news conference in Manhattan today, Mr. Schumer said the families of the officers, Nicolas T. Pekearo and Yevgeniy Marshalik, were each entitled to about $300,000 in federal benefits intended to compensate police and other public safety officers who die in the line of duty. He said officials of the Justice Department turned down applications from the two families in September, saying that neither of the two auxiliary officers qualified as public safety officers because they did "not have the power to make arrests."

"The denial is simply wrong-headed," said Mr. Kelly, who said he would testify on behalf of the two families on a hearing in Manhattan on Wednesday before a Department of Justice panel that is to consider an appeal of the decision.
