Issued Gear

4 posts in this topic

Just curious, when you join your department, what are you issued?

As far as turnout gear goes, do you get new turnouy gear that's fitted to ou, or are you issued old/used geat? How about a SCBA mask? Do you get your own? What else are you given when you join?

For one thing, we don't issue a burger like the one next to your name!! That's bad a**!

When we get a new member, they are used "hand-me-down" gear until they complete their required training. Once you finish your training, you receive the following;

Helmet

Hood

Gloves

Coat

Bunker Pants

Boots

Most of our membership also has a Survivor Light issued by the FD. FAST Members and others that work with the Truck also get a Gemtor harness. Over time, many more members begin carrying seatbelt cutters, door chocks and folding spanner wrenches, also courtesy of the CFD. Once Interior certified, a red and white sticker with an "I" is given to you for your helmet.

In Tarrytown it really varies by who's chief, and what funding is available. Typically you get used stuff until the next round of purchasing, which may or may not coincide with your completing training.

The gear you get is typically, Helmet, turnout gear, hood, structural gloves, and boots. Last time out we got leather boots. Oh, and only folks that needed it got new stuff. Others with old stuff, as long as it wasn't damaged, kept it.. (not always the case). Pagers, you usually get what's available, usually used. Though that varies by funding available, as I believe now there may be some set aside for communications. Masks are on the rigs, if you have a special need (like you have prescription inserts, or you need an uncommon size to fit your face, in which case you get your own). Also, some of the rigs have all their masks with enunciators, some do not. Also, survivor lights, and larger hand lights are on the rig strategically placed. It's expected that anyone going in will grab them as they grab packs.

Any additional gear is up to the individual's discretion (like bail out rope, webbing, door chocks, folding spanner wrenches, etc.)
