Leather helmet painting

I know there was a topic on this but it's now closed.

I have a second hand leather helmet. It was purchased natural, painted yellow then black. I need it to be black, but the guy who painted it did a pretty bad job and after some use, it's completely yellow around the brim. I'm buying the recommended paint, but what I need to know is if I should sand it down with a fine paper or just paint over it or what. Thanks in advance.

There is a guy out of Boston who does good work on Leather helmets. He refirbed my work lid as well as several others. Im sure if you called him he could give you some advise on the paint job. Or you could send it to him, he is very reasonable with pricing.

Cairns MSA puts out a paint and primer for leathers. On their website there are detailed instructions how to clean, prepare, prime and paint a helmet.

Why are you worried about a new look anyway. #1 you don't use the helmet. #2 you leave fires anyway. LOL

Our friend "Danger" was home sick,went to the fire on Miron drive, and then left the scene because he "didn't feel well". I think he did not want to take up........ LOL. We still love ya Dunderdale.

I have painted my leather New Yorkers several times over the years. I ususally just sand it down with progressivly lighter grit sand paper. Make sure to avoid the stitching. And then repaint with any enamel paint as you would normally paint an object.
