NYPD ESU is an ALS level agency. Typically individuals in the department who are paramedics who have the opportunity to get assigned to ESU will be assigned with Emergency Service as Tactical Paramedics. Many of these Tactical Medics are assigned to the ESU Apprehension Team (A-Team), which conducts full time warrant service for the department.

All NYPD ESU are at least EMTs and they have plenty of paramedics, RNs and even some PAs and MDs. They became an ALS agency in 2004, IIRC, but limited to tactical only operations so as to not upset FDNY EMS.
