5 posts in this topic

How come you don't see a lot of departments using the old style hose bed cover like you saw on the mack in the city if you think about it you could use that area for more storage

The canopy style hose bed covers, like on some of the old FDNY rigs, were a product of the "war years" of the '60's and '70's, and were used to keep debris thrown by people at the engines out of the hosebeds. The only reason I see for hosebed covers today, although not a neccesity, is to keep snow/ice and leaves/dirt out of the hosebed.

Those covers on the hose beds were not only on the mack pumpers they were also on the american La france pumpers yonkers also followed that style for along time but if you look at the trucks from back then the hose beds were much wider than they are now and seemed deeper

yes those hose bed covers were made to keep people from throwing things on to the beds but your also forgetting a very important point.

the hose bed covers were made to protect the hose. it was there to keep or cut down on the elmets getting on the hose. such as rain, snow, and sunlight. all these elmets will cut down on the life of the hose, and deteriate the hose quicker. alot of the time this will double the life of the hose
