Battalion Chief arrested

      By Brian Arrington

      The Walton Tribune

Published November 24, 2004

WALTON COUNTY - Three firefighters, including a high-ranking county fire

department official, have been arrested and charged for allegedly heading up

a multi-county ring in which emergency personnel radios were illegally

programmed to pick up calls from other emergency agencies throughout the

Metro Atlanta area.

Walton County Fire Department Battalion Chief Steve G. Akery, 49, Monroe

firefighter Andy King, 24, and volunteer firefighter Calvin "Todd" Leachmon,

37, all of Monroe, were charged with computer network trespass after they

turned themselves in to the Walton County sheriff's department Nov. 12,

according to police reports.

Huh?

Something isn't adding up here. There must of been a personal vendetta going on or something, because ARRESTING someone for this seems awfully harsh.

From the context, it sounds as if merely having the radios programmed was not the actual crime; the article makes it sound as if they intentionally accessed a protected network, which is a crime, in order to program the radios.
