Rep. Nita Lowey tours Yonkers public housing today

Ernie Garcia • The Journal News • January 14, 2008

YONKERS - Rep. Nita Lowey, D-Harrison, will tour two public housing complexes in the city today.

City Council President Chuck Lesnick will take the congresswoman to the closed Mulford Gardens complex, where asbestos removal is scheduled to begin on Jan. 29 and the first buildings will come down on Feb. 15.

Lesnick and Lowey will also visit the Schlobohm Houses on Schroeder Street, where the housing authority has erected a security barrier that has reduced crime.

"Basically she's in town because she wanted to see how federal money is being spent," said Lesnick this morning.

In 2004 Lowey helped the city procure a critical $20 million federal grant for the $153 million make-over of the Mulford Gardens complex. Demolition work there is expected to be done by June 27.

I had posted about Mulford being a ghost town a few months back, maybe a year ago...that topic was closed as a result of age...This is the first update I have heard in a while!

I remember responding to calls in that dump when I worked EMS down there! We had PD with us for all calls and it was not uncommon to have things dropped out of windows at you!
