A Very Tall Mailbox

I was in Texas recently, and noticed this unusually tall mailbox. Does anyone know of any logical reason why it would be so tall? Maybe just a decorative element?

I think AirMail too. That's only the second or third of those I've seen. Could be for something else, though. What? I don't have a bloody clue!

I know a couple of guys at the post office, they've never said anything about a high mailbox! I'll ask them if the USPS has got a Zodiac or something for the mail in floods!

Doesn't it date back to when the postal workers rode on horseback? All they did was stand up and put the mail in!
