Off-Duty Upstate New York Firefighter Dies in House Blaze

Fellow Members Pull Comrade from Burning Home

The Associated Press

CHITTENANGO, N.Y. (AP) -- An 18-year-old off-duty volunteer firefighter died today in an upstate house blaze.

Authorities say Jeff Shetler was pulled from the burning home by fellow members of the Chittenango Fire Department. He was taken by ambulance to University Hospital in Syracuse where he died.

Shetler was asleep in an upstairs bedroom when the fire began shortly after 8 a-m. Investigators say his parents had left for work and there was no smoke detector to wake him.

Shetler graduated from firefighter training last month and recently joined the department.

The cause is under investigation, but fire investigators believe an electrical problem on the first floor may be to blame.

Chittenango is 14 miles east of Syracuse.

This is especially sad, with the holidays fast approaching.

Thoughts and prayers with his family and fellow firefighters.
