Union Vale fire district voters approve ambulance

VERBANK — The Union Vale Fire Department held its annual election Tuesday.

Incumbent Commissioner Tom Martell ran unopposed for a five-year term.

His new term will expire in 2012.

A referendum to buy a new ambulance through a lease-purchase agreement was approved by voters 31 to 13. The cost is not to exceed $146,000.

Isn't it sad that only 44 people came out to vote?

This in a district with about 5000 residents. Pathetic!

Tommy is a great Commissioner and ran unopposed so there was no interest in the election. Beekman had a highly contested

race and only 200+ out of 14,000 voted. The 3 hour window on a weird date with bad weather and little to no publicity doesn't make it a popular election. Good job Tom.

in union vale fd, your ems is considered "rescue squad," right?

Yes, its considered a rescue squad, just like Beekman, East Fishkill, etc., since it is a part of the fire department. the only V.A.C. that exists in dutchess county Is Beacon V.A.C., which is associated, but separate from the FD

My comment wasn't directed at the Commissioner - I wouldn't know him if I ran into him. My comment was directed at the residents of the district who ignore what's going on around them!

Is it actually a "highly contested" race if only 200 out of 14000 bothered to vote??? :P

According to the Dutchess County Board of Elections records for 2006 there were only 2922 registered voters in Union Vale and 6782 registered in Beekman.

Thanks to everyone who came out to vote on a crummy night and supported our new ambulance. It will be a PL Custom Type 1 on a Ford F 450. It will replace a 1997 Ford / National Type 1 and run out of Station 1 in Verbank.
