AN APPLICANT FOR THE OPEN-COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION MUST BE A RESIDENT OF THE CITY OF YONKERS, N.Y. AT THE TIME OF THE EXAM AND FOR AT LEAST ONE YEAR PRIOR TO AND CONTINUOUSLY UP TO THE DATE OF APPOINTMENT.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS::

This position is responsible for patrolling and maintaining watch over public buildings and grounds. Maintains a safe environment for all personnel, visitors and occupants of assigned buildings and spaces. The incumbent restricts access to public buildings and spaces to those authorized. Incidents are reported to immediate supervisor. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative Only)

Checks all points of entry in assigned areas to make sure they are secured;

Prevents the admittance of unauthorized persons;

Checks visitors credentials and directs them to their proper destinations;

Investigates unusual conditions or disturbances and reports the occurrences to the proper

authority;

Patrols buildings and grounds to protect property against trespassing, vandalism, fire, etc.;

Prepares and maintains routine logs and reports;

Prepares reports about trespassing and other incidents;

Patrols assigned area for the purpose of identifying visitors and preventing loitering

and takes appropriate follow-up action;

Reports and may assist in the resolving of emergency situations;

Patrols, on foot or from a vehicle, assigned area;

Participates in formal classroom and on-the-job training in enforcement activities;

Maintains traffic safety in assigned areas;

Ensures that fire lanes in assigned areas are clear;

Generally observes fire equipment and reports concerns to proper authority;

Observes ingress and egress areas and reports concerns to proper authority;

Assists proper authority and fire or police officials at scene where applicable;

Reports any general fire hazards within assigned area to proper authority;

Reports fire alarm malfunction within assigned building to proper authority;

Responds to annunciator panel with authorized personnel in order to answer any questions from fire officials when they arrive at the scene;

Operates two-way radio;

Responds to a variety of citizens’ inquiries and requests for assistance within assigned area;

May accompany individuals to the hospital or other such agency in emergency situations;

Screens persons for weapons utilizing metal detector and other equipment;

Performs duties pertinent to public safety in conjunction with appropriate safety and

civil defense drills;

Prepares for and testifies in court when required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates must meet the requirements of one of the following groups on or before the date of the written test.

OPEN-COMPETITIVE:

Graduation from high school or possession of a High School Equivalency Diploma.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Possession of a valid Class D Driver’s License.

2. Possession of a New York State Security Guard Registration (licensure) at time of

appointment.

NOTE:

Candidates are subject to a background investigation.

Conviction of a misdemeanor or other violation of the law may bar employment; conviction of a

felony shall bar employment.

SUBJECT OF EXAMINATION:

A written test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and/or abilities in the following areas:

1. Applying written Information In a safety and security setting

These questions evaluate the your ability to read, interpret and apply rules, regulations, directives, written narratives and other related material. You will be required to read a set of information and to appropriately apply the information to situations similar to those typically experienced in a public safety and security service setting. All information needed to answer the questions is contained in the rules, regulations, etc. which are cited.

2. Following Directions (maps)

These questions test your ability to follow physical/geographic directions using street maps or building maps. You will have to read and understand a set of directions and then use them on a simple map.

3. Understanding and interpreting written material

These questions test how well you comprehend written material. You will be provided with brief reading selections and will be asked questions about the selections. All the information required to answer the questions will be presented in the selections; you will not be required to have any special knowledge relating to the subject areas of the selections.

YOU MAY NOT BRING BOOKS OR OTHER REFERENCE MATERIALS.
