Firefighters Act As Dads After Baby Abandoned

6 posts in this topic

LAKE WALES, Fla. - A baby was abandoned and seven firefighters became makeshift fathers. The baby was left at a fire station in Lake Wales, WESH 2 News reported.

According to officials, the baby was in a car seat stocked with diapers, formula, and a card that gave his birth date and next feeding time. The firefighters said they knew the woman dropped the baby off under the Safe Haven Law, which allows a parent to take a newborn to an emergency room, firehouse or EMS station, no questions asked.

And for that, many said they were relieved but torn.

"A cross between kind of sad, wondering why a person could get to this point to bring a baby to the fire station, but then again I was kind of excited because we did have a baby that we could take care of, and we knew nothing bad was going to happen to it," Perry Daughtry, deputy fire chief, said.

The firefighters said they are trying to decide which one will adopt the baby.

The baby is in the care of the Department of Children and Families.

I know down here in FL, every single firehouse, police station, some krispy kremes (yes, its true) and other pubic places are designated "Safe Places" which allow the parents of a new born, up to 48 hours after birth I believe, to leave the baby with the employees of the work site. I was wondering if NY has the same laws, if so, I sure haven't heard of any

NY does have the safe haven law and if I'm not mistaken, it's a federal law.
