Candle in bathroom ignites vinyl siding; Greenburgh apartment building evacuated

GREENBURGH - A candle in a bathroom ignited vinyl siding and filled a sixth-floor apartment with thick black smoke late last night.

Firefighters evacuated the mother and two children from the apartment and the other residents of the seven-floor structure on Manhattan Avenue before anyone was injured.

"People want to have these mood candles, so we preach and teach that you have to be very, very careful," Fairview Deputy Fire Chief Walter Murray said. "There was a lot of heat and a lot of smoke."

The fire department responded to the 10:40 p.m. emergency at 100 Manhattan Ave. and had the fire out shortly after 11 p.m.

Firefighters fought the blaze from the inside; most of the damage was limited to the apartment.

The building had only battery-operated smoke detectors, which worked; a smoke detection system was being installed as part of a renovation, the fire department said.

The mother and her children stayed with relatives overnight.

Tim - the vinyl they're talking about - do they mean the shower/tub stall inside? I was thinking 100 Manhattan is a brick building, no?

Yes , upgrade of Shower / Tub molded insert burned very Hot and Fast creating black smoke. Standard tile bathroom might not have been so rapidly.

Building is 7 story brick undergoing refurb inside apartments including these brand new bathrooms.

Resident was not injured , called 911 right away.
