Greenburgh- Consolidating Services

12 posts in this topic

That was the article in today's Journal News.

Considering Greenburgh is looking at consolidating some police functions, would it make sense to look at the three Fire Districts (Greenville, Fairview & Hartsdale) as well?? Ultimately the voters of each of the districts would have to approve it.

Interesting, are those three fire districts interested at all with consolidating or was this just a topic paired with the consolidating of the police?

The question came to mind while reading the article. Greenburgh has a Townwide (outside of the Villages) Police Department so why not a Townwide Fire District?? Not in favor of it one way or another. Just a thought.

Which village police departments will be consolidated with Greenburgh?

This topic comes up from time to time- years ago when Feiner was just elected he formed a committee to look into the consolidation of the Fire Districts, I sat on the committe for almost 2 1/2 years spining our wheels. one of the biggest problems was, what to do with the "fire protection districts" it seems that Greenburgh pays a whole lot of money , one million is a good number to start with,to the villages (Elmsford, Tarrytown, Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Hastings, Irvington) to protect areas that are actually in the unincorporated Town of Greenburgh. theses towns then distribute money to the Fire Departments (not all of it they keep a portion for the general fund).

This wasent the only probelm--equalization of taxes was another, administering fire department contracts was another, how to change the voting structure a real biggie, comissioners to a town board, so the committe sat and did nothing but spin wheels.

Will consolidation save money for the taxpayers of unincorportated Greenburgh it might only if the whole unincorporated ares in included not just the 3 combo fire districts.

The benefits to merging would be downsizing equipment and firehouses. You could do away with many chiefs cars and rigs. Another advantage would be the pooling of manpower. The biggest advantage would be a savings.

What could be a disadvantage is the formation or big government. The bigger govt gets the less accessible it is to the people. Also, who would be in charge. Someone would have to give up authority. That would mean some commissioners would have to vote to resolve thier authority. Who would be chief? Captain? Etc. As petty as these issues may sound they are stumbling blocks.

For the record I am in favor of merging.

Greenburgh, Dobbs Ferry could share services

Play the video (11/13/07) DOBBS FERRY - Greenburgh has expressed interest in sharing police services with Dobbs Ferry and a vote Tuesday night made it one step closer to becoming reality.

The Dobbs Ferry Board of Trustees voted to apply for a $100,000 state grant to study how the village and town could consolidate some police services.

Dobbs Ferry and Greenburgh already share a SWAT team, marine unit and a drug and alcohol task force. The grant would be used to reveal duplicate police services within both communities and demonstrate how changes could save taxpayer dollars.

Both the village and town would have to pay $5,000 each if the state approves the grant.

Dobbs Ferry worked with Irvington earlier this year in studying the possibility of sharing services. However, that collapsed in Irvington due to residents’ concerns.

Greenburgh will hold a similar vote Wednesday night on whether to apply for the grant or not.

Is Dobbs Ferry considered part of the Town of Greenburgh, and if not what town is it part of?

Dobbs Ferry is a Village within the Town of Greenburgh.

There are five other villages in the town:

Elmsford

Tarrytown

Ardsley

Irvington

Hastings

There is also a large unincorporated (town outside the villages) area.

The missing shopping carts in Dobbs Ferry will drop drastically when the Greenburgh SCRU (Shopping Cart Retrieval Unit) gets there!
