Duties/ Responsibilities

This position is not in the Classified Service but, is covered under Military Law. If selected, Civil Service employees will lose their seniority within the Classified Service, thereby exempting them from applying for promotional exams within Civil Service.

Under the direct supervision of the Fire Chief, performs all duties as outlined in AFI 32-200 1, AFM 32-2003, NGR 5-1/ANGI 63-101, NFPA 1041, 1500 and 1521. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

May supervise Airport Firefighters in firefighting activities and other assigned tasks as directed.

Manages the NFPA 1500, Firefighter Safety program, to include the organizational risk management program.

Manages the DOD firefighter certification program for the Fire Department in accordance with the accredited certification program defined in AFMAN 32-2003.

Provides detailed briefings on compliance, non-compliance and effectiveness of the training and safety programs.

Maintain all applicable publications and reference material required for training and safety programs and ensures that all required training aids are available.

Minimum/Preferred Qualifications

Must possess at least ten years experience in Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) in which three years must have been in a full time position.

Or

Must be a permanent New York State Airport Firefighter for a minimum of five years.

And

Must be capable of performing heavy lifting during emergency situations.

Must maintain physical standards in accordance with NFPA 1500 and NFPA 1582.

Must be certified in accordance with the accredited firefighter certification program defined in AFMAN 32-2003 to the following levels as a minimum:

Airport Firefighter

Fire Officer II

Fire Instructor II

Hazardous Materials Incident Command

Must obtain Fire Inspector I certification within 24 months of appointment.

Must be certified as, and maintain certification as a New York State Certified First Responder (CFR).

Must maintain a telephone at place of residence.

Must have a valid driver's license to operate motor vehicles in New York State as well as USAF driver’s license for assigned Fire Department vehicles.

Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.

Must have and maintain a security clearance rating of secret.

Must maintain certification as a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) instructor.
