Middletown mayor suspends fire chief over campaign complaints

Middletown — In a final clash of the city's campaign season, Middletown's mayor and fire chief have collided in a quarrel that figures to extend long after votes are counted.

It started Monday night when Mayor Marlinda Duncanson called Chief Sam Barone to her office and suspended him for 30 days. The reason says Duncanson: Barone used the chief's vehicle to campaign and to cart unauthorized people — his teenage boys — around the city. The reason according to Barone: small-town politics and a personal vendetta.
