I came across this photo on break.com I thought it was pretty funny.

Then I goggled it to see if it was a real fire company, and sure enough.

jd,

yes and no, see I knew about intercourse, in fact I think there is even a blueballs fire department. But departments should all try an "excell" here we have the unexcelled department.....lol.

However I only thought it was a funny name. I am sure they are a very professionaly run deartment and sadly the name just does them no justice.

LOL...Blueballs Fire Dept., Histerical. You make a great point.

This spawns a curiosity....Where do these fire company names come from, i.e.-Vigilant, Phoenix, Chemical, Freindship, Alpha, Intercourse, Unexcelled, ...I have heard so many different kinds, most in PA. Any Fire History buff's have any ideas?

Look at some of the names used by the old NYFD volunteers, same premise. Get the old Webster dictionary out and look up the definitions, you'll be surprised! Just like they old vollies took pride in thier rigs, they also tried to out do each other with thier company names.

The some of the most used fire company names were Hope, Friendship, Vigilant, Alert, Cataract, Deluge, Franklin and Washington.

As for Intercourse and Blue Ball (no "s") those are towns in Amish county area of PA. Try looking up some town names out west, some of them are not "normal either! :)
