Drunk FF Shoots other FF in NY Firehouse

17 posts in this topic

Hey....

In today's "ain't we proud" segment, a New York Firefighter was shot and wounded by another Firefighter who was drunk, in their upstate New York firehouse. FF Tyler Drake, 21, of Alexandria Bay, was accidentally shot in the right arm around 1900 hours Sunday inside the Moyers Corner FD Station. Drake was taken to University Hospital in nearby Syracuse and his injuries were not life-threatening. FF Stanley Memmelaar, 26, of Moyers Corner was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree assault and driving while intoxicated. Memmelaar was handling his .45-caliber handgun recklessly when it discharged...although he had a valid pistol license according to the cops.

FF Tyler Drake could have been killed.

Take Care,

BillyG

In the words of my history teacher "STOOOOOOOOPPPPPIIIIIDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" This is why I'm against booze in the firehouse. Although this begs the question "Did he drink at the firehouse, or do we rack up a DUI charge, too? Since if he didn't drink there, then he must of drove himself there."

After reading www.Signal99.com forums, it appears there is more to the story. The shooter had been appointed an Onondaga County Sheriff and had just completed the academy and was then discharged from the force.

Seriously now...

And to think that there are people who actually believe that people can judge for themselves when they've had enough or should/shouldn't board fire apparatus.

Thread on drinking being allowed in firehouse

It is absurd to mix alcohol and the emergency services! I don't care if it's police, fire or EMS - the two simply don't mix. As well evidenced by the candidate for a Darwin award in this story!

Unless there are two Moyers Corners FD's, the one I know is no "Podunk" Fire Department...... The one that I am familiar with is in a suburb of Syracuse and they are a busy and what I would consider a "progressive" VFD that many local departments would look pale in comparison to.

From their web site -

"Founded in 1948, the Moyers Corners Fire Department (ISO 3 Rating) is a 100% volunteer department located in the densely populated northern division of Onondaga County, New York, provides fire, rescue and emergency medical services within the Town of Clay. With an urban/suburban response coverage area of approximately 23 square miles, the department protects a resident population of over 55,000 and a day time population of over 75,000. A diversified district comprised of extensive single family dwellings, multiple occupancy apartments, townhouses and garden apartment structures, industrial facilities, business and office parks and commercial and retail centers and complexes. Major interstate and highway systems criss-cross through the district which includes major rail lines and over 5 miles of waterfront.

Under the command of Chief Steven Bressette, the department is staffed with two Deputy Fire Chiefs, three Battalion Chiefs, 19 company officers and over 100 volunteer firefighters. The department averages 1700 alarms annually. The ALS/ EMS services were diversified in 1995 and are presently provided by the independent Northern Onondaga Volunteer Ambulance Corps (N.O.V.A.) Operations are conducted out of four fire stations strategically located within three battalion response areas.

The unfortunate thing with the Volunteer Fire Service and even to some extent in the paid sector is you can't weed out all the chuckleheads...... Sometimes you can't see the weeds until they sprout as was the case here.... An the fact that he was a Sheriffs Deputy is more disturbing to me.... And they do Psych exams......

I really don't think they spec their apparatus with gun racks....... At least I can't see them from the photo's ...... Maybe you guys can.... And I don't think they're playing Banjos any more..... They're more sophisticated than that and I think they now play guitars.......

Sorry; but knowing the department and listening to some of these comments, I had to.....

Yeah, yeah, yeah...so they don't have shotgun racks...sorry! I only went to Oswego so I have no idea where this is...right? Syracuse although a city, is hick to me, maybe not as much as like Jamestown or Putnam Valley (sorry) but still not the true burbs or Cities, all they have is minor league baseball and a great college basketball program and an okay football program.
