It's been 3 long years, but its happening!

I'm not sure how many of you guys remember 3 years ago when I asked about help starting a campus based 911 medical response unit, so if you don't, now you do....

All I have to say it's finally happening. As of October 13, the M.E.D (Medical Emergency Disaster) Relief Team at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is going operational. It took years for the vision of three of us, me and 2 of my buddies, to finally get this off the ground. Hundreds of hours of meeting with campus safety personnel, local paid fire department chiefs, the paid ambulance service, county OEM and a whole bunch of lawyers, administrative persons and every other desk jockey you could think of that would want to hamper our presence has paid off.

We will be operating as a stand-by crew at events on campus for the first month or two for the local community to get used to our presence and for us to show off our skills and professionalism, then finally move up to a 911 response on campus. We currently have 2 fully equipped BLS bikes that we will be operating, and we'll be purchasing a 4x4 gator soon to carry even more equipment that we've purchased such as backboards and other equipment.

We wont be transporting patients, at all, ever, because it puts too much liability on us, as well as the local unions wont allow for it, but thats OK with us...we're at least able to keep our skills up to date, and do something that we all love. Thanks for all the help that all you have given over the last couple of years, and if you stop down for the Daytona 500 sometime, come swing by our campus and check us out.

Hey, congratulations guys! I cant tell you how much good a response team at a college helps. My ambulance service works closely with the S.M.R.T (Student Medical Response Team) here at our SUNY. They are great EMS providers, and some go above and beyond, always comforting the pt for us and riding along to the ER in our rig to help us out. They respond to all calls on campus with security to check it out, and if a rig is needed they call us, but most of the time its just drunk college kids who need to sleep it off.....by the way, be prepared for THAT!!! You guys will probably have a lot of drunk calls.

Best of luck to you guys, and hopefully all works out well for you in the future!

Moose
