I think this is an EXCELLENT idea! Several years back, I had wanted to do this in Westchester. But I procrastinated. Hopefully, they will offer something similar too.

RAMAPO - Young people interested in learning firefighting and life-saving procedures can get first-hand training starting Friday.

The Rockland County Fire and EMS Youth Academy kicks off at the Fire Training Center, Firemen's Memorial Drive off Route 45.

The free classes will run this month from 7 to 9 p.m. on Fridays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays this month, with the final day of class on Nov. 2.

The idea behind the academy is to interest 12-to 15-year-olds into one day becoming volunteer firefighters or EMS life-savers with the ambulance companies.

Those attending the academy will learn what firefighters and EMS personnel do at emergency scenes.

Anyone interested in the Rockland Fire and EMS Youth Academy can call the Rockland County Office of Fire and Emergency Services at 845-364-8800.
