FireFighterCloseCalls.com Presents

WITHOUT QUESTION.....

..we ALL want to respond to fires-get there quick-and do what we joined to do.

HOWEVER....

WE HAVE TO ACTUALLY ARRIVE.

EVERY YEAR ABOUT 25% OF US DIE NEEDLESSLY IN APPARATUS

AND RELATED EMERGENCY VEHICLE CRASHES....

and when that happens:

WE DON'T ARRIVE AT THE FIRE.

WE END UP HURT OR HURTING.

WE END UP DEAD OR WE END UP KILLING.

FOR WHAT ??

APPARATUS DRIVERS: SLOW DOWN-STOP AT RED LIGHTS & STOP SIGNS.

FIRE OFFICERS: ENFORCE THE LAWS AND FD POLICIES.

FIREFIGHTERS: SEATBELTS. NO LAME EXCUSES.

ENOUGH.

Excellent! I love that web site, it offers a slap in the face like that every now and than and keeps firefighters and EMS workers in line. Kind of ties in with the other post about the Canadian firefighter....doesnt it? ;)

Am I reading that right? 25% of ALL firefighters die in Emergency vehicle accidents? Or do they mean that 25% of firefighters involved in those accidents die? Sounds like a very steep statistic either way. Does anyone have actual numbers of vehicle accidents, number of injuries (ff and civilian), and number of resulting fatalities? It still is a worthwhile message, because of posters like that I always wear a seatbelt in the apparatus. It just seems like a rather strong claim about firefighter fatalities.

My interpretation is the 25% of Firefighter deaths are in accidents while responding. Last year.

Did anyone else notice the person in the background, I guess the person holding the camera saying things like "he didn't even stop" or "he didn't check the intersection"??? Wonder whether it was police or another member of the department going to the same call becuase you can hear some sort of radio going in the background. Either way they brought up very good points.

1/4 of LODD deaths each year can be attributed to motor vehicle collisions.

The video of the fire apparatus in Australia was a combination of a couple of things.

1. Speed...he was travelling too fast.

2. The engine in front of him stopped short.

3. Tunnel vision which is why he didn't know he was going to fast and had a late reaction to the engine stopping short.

I don't wear my seatbelt because of posters. I wear my seatbelt because I want to go home to my kids. Not to mention that I was young when the law for wearing them was enacted so its second nature.
