BREWSTER - Two firefighters suffered heat exhaustion last night, but no one else was injured in a fire that rendered a Rockledge Drive house uninhabitable, a fire official said.

The fire at 18 Rockledge Drive was reported shortly after 7 p.m. and is thought to have started in the garage before spreading into the rest of the house, said Shawn Conrad, first assistant chief of the Brewster Fire Department.

The cause of the blaze was not known last night.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, Conrad said, the left side of the house was engulfed in flames.

The residents, a couple, were outside. Their son arrived about 9 p.m., and they were expected to stay with him.

It took firefighters about 25 minutes to bring the fire under control, Conrad said.

On Aug. 5, the Brewster Fire Department responded to a house fire about 5 miles away at 65 Panorama Drive. In that incident, firefighters helped keep a garage fire from spreading to the rest of a one-story house. A vehicle that the homeowner had apparently been working on in the garage was destroyed by the fire. A few firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion, and the homeowner suffered minor injuries.
