Rig with no cab door

17 posts in this topic

I found this video...The truck has no officer side door on the crew cab. Just wondering why. Easier? Or maybe it just broke i dont know. Are you allowed to do this if they did it intentionally? Just curious. Seems like a good idea to make it easier, but not a safe one.

That's a good question. There is actually nothing that says a car (or truck) has to have doors. This was discussed at work when someone brought up a regular edp. Apparently he used to drive around Yonkers in a car without doors! So legally...there is nothing wrong with it...just hope you don't get struck on that side!

With jeeps and vehicle laws the only thing you might need to worry about is if you have to have side view mirrors on a car? I think in CT you need mirrors, of course a jeep owner with no mirrors told me that.

But the major question is why would you want to ride in a rig with no door?

Then he doesn't have to stick his head out the window to get a better breeze!

I think after watching the video, that only the back of the rigs had no doors. I don't know the law on this, but i know that not all rigs have doors on the back. Our department has two older pumpers that don't have doors but do have an item called a man saver, which is just a metal barr you push up out of the way.

Those are just the old open cabs/open jump seats...w/e you would like to call em.

I have seen this done with older engines to prevent overheating while pumping. Mostly with Macks that had V8, and cab was retro fitted to enclose the back. That rig did not look that old. Wonder if that would have any effect on warranties, and or dept. insurance.

I do seem to remember that there IS a law reguarding doors in NY, that only vehicles that have removable doors from the factory, IE.- Jeeps, older Chevy Blazers, etc. can be driven without them. The mirrors are usually mounted on the hood, or the A-Pillar of the vehicle. Firetrucks however, i think only have to be up to the standard of the year they were manufactured.

Here is another question though, does the federal Government regulate the Firetruck laws, or does the NFPA? Because if it was the NFPA the trucks would only have to be up to their standards.

Yep - had no glass, other than a square of plexiglass in front of the driver's seat!

I think wooden bumpers too, but I may be wrong....

He was and still is Nuckin' Futs!!!!!!!!

We were discussing our favorite EDP's...such as Judith formerly of Pine St, Mrs. Rabinowitz, Mr. Davies (is he a member of this site?-I told him to join...oooops), and the many others that fill our life with entertainment...it is sad when you say you miss talking to them after they pass away or get put in a long term center! But we all do, they break up the routine.

CT law, as I know it says you only have to have a drivers sideview mirror. No doors on the Jeep is fine.

Remember hearing something about folding the windshield down and the highway though.

I don't think they should have a problem...you sometimes get hungry and bugs are free food. LOL!
