This looks like a pretty cool training center in Springfield Mass

It is a very cool burn building. The Connecticut fire academy uses this building for the live burn evolutions for the recruit classes. Pretty much has everything you could want to simulate a typical residential fire.

I assume they follow 1403. I don't know the ins and outs but I understand that in training there's not supposed to be multiple burns. I'll also assume this was just for illustration - or exterior training or something.

Got to agree though - looks nice. It's been a loooonnnng time since I've been able to do interior live burn training.

Monty,

NFPA 1403 only limits to 1 training fire per evolution for acquired structure live fire training. Dedicated burn buildings you are allowed multiple burns and as also with acquired structures burning in egress areas (stairs, doors) is prohibited. Each type of building has its own chapter under NFPA 1403.

Fire Station 81, City Of Los Angeles FD, has the most modern and diverse training building that I've ever seen. It's brand new, and includes a whole range of features to replicate a variety of different buildings and situations. It's construction is solid, and was very well thought out. It even includes a hydration station, a place for firefighters to rinse their face and masks, and even a system to burn wood and other materials to create real smoke inside instead of the fake stuff.

WOW!! That is awesome bro. Wish we had that to train in. You are right. Just by looking at the photos I have to say that its the most progressive building I've seen. Thanks for sharing that photo.

Funny enough it kinda looks like a modern mini-me prison as well.

Wood can be used to create smoke, but is the fire gas generated or wood?

Party if your referring to the original post picture...that is class A from what I can see. Looks like a good view of pallets burning. Also looking at the soot build up outside most of the windows...only wood would do that in my experience with both types of training facilities both gas and Class A.

Thanks ALS, but I should have been more specific I was referring to the LAFD building. It looks like they only burn in one part of the building.

Thanks for that. I've added reading 1403 to my list of things to do when I'm bored :) Or if I get involved with live fire training - not sure which will come first ....

Its a good read. If you read that, I also highly recommend you read NFPA 1500. Very well written common sense document.

Keep an eye out, usually in the winter the county has the "Live Fire Training" and "Conducting Live Fire Training Evolutions" awareness courses.

I'd love to do a couple evolutions in either one of them
