Worker who fell off water pipe was taken to hospital

By Sarah Bradshaw

Poughkeepsie Journal

WAPPINGERS FALLS -- A man who fell off a water pipe that crosses the Wappinger Creek near the hydro-electric power plant was taken to the hospital, police said.

At about 11 a.m. today, a worker was fixing a wall that was eroding when he slipped and fell about 25 feet to the bank below, said police Lt. John Birdsell. He landed near the village's waterfall, located near East Main Street.

Due to injuries and the steep incline of the embankment surrounding the creek, the man had to be lifted in a fire truck bucket, Birdsell said. He was taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie at about 12:30 p.m., police said. He was conscious during the rescue however, the scope of his injuries are unknown.

The pipe is called a penstock. It takes in water from the creek and uses it to produce electricity with modern generators. Then the energy is fed into the common electrical grid.

Check back for more updates.

Sounds like the person fell from that big green pipe in the flooding pictures from a while back that caused so much drama here.
