Truly disturbing. Find the pricks responsible and make them rebuild it, piece by piece.

9/11 VANDAL SHOCK

STATEN I. PLAQUES SHATTERED

By PERRY CHIARAMONTE

June 26, 2007 -- A 9/11 memorial on Staten Island was vandalized yesterday - leaving distraught families of those honored reeling when they discovered the granite plaques commemorating their loved ones had been defaced.

The plaques - bearing the names of Jason DeFazio, a Cantor Fitzgerald employee, and Jeffrey Olsen, a firefighter at Engine Co. 10 on Liberty Street in lower Manhattan - were found smashed and broken into several pieces.

"For someone to vandalize this is something I can't believe," DeFazio's widow, Michelle, told WCBS/Channel 2.

Carol Olsen, whose son Jeffrey died at the World Trade Center, agreed.

"It's such a perfect memorial," Olsen told WCBS. "Why would anyone do this?"

The Olsen family said they were planning to go to the memorial today to celebrate what would have been Jeffrey's 37th birthday.

The tribute, called "Postcards," was unveiled in 2004.

The $2 million waterfront monument, located in St. George along Richmond Terrace, consists of two 37-foot walls made up of individual plaques honoring all Staten Islanders killed in the 1993 and 2001 World Trade Center attacks.

The 267 plaques are etched into the sides of the structures and engraved with peoples' facial profiles, job title and name of the company they worked for when they were killed.

Borough President James Molinaro said the NYPD is investigating.

"To me, [the monuments] are like a cemetery," he said.

Unfortunately, I feel this act is like many others these days, that people don't understand or care about the ramifications of their actions. While I understand the thought, let the professionals rebuild these monuments, but restitution should include:

1) Watching the entire video of 9/11, from the impact of plane #1 to the collapse of the 2nd tower. If there is explict video of the pile including body recovery, make the idiots watch that, too.

2) On Christmas and each victim's birthday, the idiots must visit with the victim's families to see how they are remembered.

3) And of course, payment for the repair. A fine, in the form of a donation, should also be made to any remaining victim's fund.

4) And jail time, if possible.

As much as I'm not a big fan of "P/C" Sometimes I feel obligated to let discretion prevail.
