Police respond to shots fired, apparent suicide, near Clarkstown Town Hall

NEW CITY - Clarkstown police are responding to an apparent suicide near Town Hall on Maple Avenue.

A man got out of a black truck about 4 p.m. and shot himself in the mouth with a handgun, Clarkstown Police Chief Peter Noonan said. Noonan said a woman appeared to be with the man. She apparently was not hurt.

"Obviously, some of the employees, they're all out there, horrified," Supervisor Alexander Gromack said. "For them, it was a very scary moment. You can see some blood on the street."

Noonan said the road has been closed while officials question witnesses and investigate.

Police received a report that a man with a gun was driving around New City, police said. Shortly after that, the man stopped his vehicle about 75 feet from Congers Road on Maple Avenue, between the New City Fire Department and Town Hall, and shot himself, police said.
